Override protection components must be able to withstand high bending moments created by vertical offset loading in order to keep the train on the track. Override protection can work in parallel to the coupler and will typically only engage after its deformation tube stroke and coupler release have been fully used.
In addition, a stabilising function can be built into the draft gear.
