Crash Energy Management

For Passenger Trains

Safety is the top priority when operating passenger trains. In the event of a train incident, the Train Connection Systems can absorb the resulting forces and thus actively contribute to protecting passengers and train crew.

Dellner has developed its own Crash Energy Management (CEM) software for this purpose and manufactures all the necessary components required for effective Crash Energy Management.

Our experts have continuously optimised this system over the years and adapted it to the requirements of the various trains and train connections.

Safe travel with Dellner CEM

Protection system for safer travel

In the event of an accident, all the important parts for energy management are located at the front of a train and between the wagons. This concerns both the coupler and part of the wagon body outside the coupler. After all, these parts can absorb a large part of the impact forces in a severe collision.

Dellner’s Crash Energy Management aims to prevent the twisting and lifting of the wagons, which poses a particularly large risk to the lives of train passengers in the event of a train accident.

CEM simulations

Software simulation for a higher level of safety

Through our proprietary simulation software, we can offer our customers the most effective solution for energy absorption. This applies to both safety and the associated costs. In the process, we work closely with vehicle manufacturers and perform calculations and simulations for various crash scenarios.

The goal is to optimise our Train Connection System to work together with the customer’s Crash Energy Management system to ensure the highest level of passenger safety.

Verified by international certificates

Dellner configures Crash Energy Management solutions that are tailored to the customer’s specific requirements. These requirements are often based on international standards such as the European EN 15227, the Russian GOST 3241 or the American RT standards.

CEM elements

The key elements of the CEM hardware

In the event of a severe collision, the energy generated at the front of the train can be absorbed in two ways:

  • Inside the coupler by gas hydraulic dampers (reversible energy absorption) and the deformation unit (irreversible energy absorption).
  • Outside the coupler by the crash box and override protection components (additional energy absorption) and by the driver’s cab (to be designed by the train builder).
